Frequently asked questions

How is it different from my regular dentist?

Smilescool is a comprehensive education programme; it is not about fixing problems as they arise, it is about prevention.

What if my child has an NHS place? Will they lose it?

In April 06 the government changed the way NHS dental care was to be provided. No one now has a registration or place with a particular dentist, NHS care and treatment is provided only on an ‘availability of funding basis’. This means that just because you were seen previously there is no entitlement or guarantee that you will be able to be seen again when you want to in the future. With registration to smilescool you would be guaranteed your child’s place.

How many times would I come into the practice?

Up to three times a year. Each visit will include a 'POD' session with the dental health educator and a visit from / to the hygienist or dentist.

How much does it cost?

The monthly fee is based on the age of your child and ranges from £3.42 to £14.48.

What does the monthly fee include?

The fees includes the 'check-up' provision by the dentist, any treatment your child might need, the services of the hygienist / therapist for preventative treatments such as fissure sealants and the educational, prevention focused oral health care 'POD' sessions with the Dental Health Educator and smilescool team.Access to one of our dentists for 'out-of-hours' advice and treatment in the event of a dental emergency. UK & Worldwide insurance in the event of a dental injury or accident away from home.

What do I need to do to join?

Simply call your local practice to make an appointment or to talk to a member of the smilescool team. Practices often hold regular coffee sessions where you can come in with no appointment needed, and chat to a member of the smilescool team.
